Peter Lugg - The Life and Times of Isambard Kingdom Brunel

I K Brunel in front of large chains Many of us will know that Isambard Kingdom Brunel, FRS (1806 - 1859), was a leading British engineer, famed for his bridges, tunnels and stations, his steamships, and the first major British railway (the Great Western). His designs revolutionised public transport and modern engineering. He achieved many engineering firsts, including the first propeller-driven ocean-going iron ship (1843), and set the standard for a well-built railway. In 2002, Brunel came second in a poll to determine the 100 Greatest Britons.

However, what is less well known is that Brunel had many relationships with other engineers, and artists such as Mendelssohn. Indeed, he married the daughter of a prolific composer and musician called William Horsley a founder of the Royal Philharmonic Society.

We heard about another side of the famous man, not just the engineering, but also how these relationships affected Brunels career and indeed the development of engineering.
