Roger Gault - The Harrier Jump Jet - Design Icon and Cold War Warrior

The Harrier The Harrier "jump jet" is a truly iconic aircraft and our guest speaker was Roger Gault. Roger has flown over 2000 hours in Harriers as part of his command of No4 (Army Cooperation) Squadron flying Harriers in Germany and the Hawk Tactical Weapons Unit at Royal Air Force Chivenor.

The talk covered the development of the Harrier design; how to fly a Harrier (more acceleration than the average supercar!) and the RAFs concept of operation for this aircraft.

Roger shared his many experiences of 40 years of flying both with the RAF and commercially.

Roger Gault

Roger Gault Roger joined the Royal Air Force in 1964. After basic training on the Jet Provost and Gnat, he flew Javelins in the Far East and Hunters in the Middle East. During subsequent tours he flew Meteor, Chipmunk, Hunter, Harrier and Hawk aircraft and completed over 2000 hrs flying the Harrier. He was in command of No 4 (Army Cooperation) Squadron flying Harriers in Germany and the Hawk Tactical Weapons Unit at Royal Air Force Chivenor.

After leaving the service in 1999, Roger gained an Air Transport Pilots Licence and Instrument Rating and secured a job flying a Citation II executive jet from Luton.

Harrier Squadron In 1987 he joined the Honourable Company of Air Pilots (originally GAPAN), a City of London Livery Company with over 2000 professional pilot members. He was appointed Chairman of the Education & Training Committee in October 2003, was awarded the Livery in October 1990 and was elected as Master in March 2007.

Roger is an active member of the Livery Companies Skills Council and the Aviation Industry Skills Board, and has spent 2 years developing a Higher Level Apprenticeship Framework for professional pilots together with its associated National Occupational Standards. This was approved by the National Apprenticeship Service in 2013 but has yet to be taken up by an airline. However a Flight Instructor Apprenticeship will see its 1st two apprenticeships complete in July 2015.

You can see from the above that Roger is particularly passionate about helping young people into aviation.
